1 cup (150 grams) fresh or frozen unsweetened fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, kiwi, cantaloupe, honeydew, papaya, pineapple, mango, and/or orange segments)
1 fresh or frozen banana, cut into chunks
1 cup (200 grams) frozen sorbet or sherbet
1/4 cup (70 grams) plain or flavored yogurt
2 - 4 tablespoons fruit juice, add more if necessary
crushed ice (optional)
Fruit Smoothie: Place all the ingredients in a blender or food processor and process until smooth. If necessary, add more fruit juice or crushed ice. Also, taste and add sugar if needed. Pour into glasses and serve immediately.

I love Fruit Smoothies. I love their flavor, how easy they are to make, and their versatility. A Fruit Smoothie is a blended drink with a milkshake-like consistency that starts with either fresh or frozen fruit. To the fruit you can add a variety of ingredients. Things like frozen ices (sorbet or sherbet), yogurt (plain or flavored), crushed ice, and fruit juices. Smoothies are best enjoyed shortly after making them as they do tend to separate when stored.
The Fruit Smoothie recipe given here is a little different in that I like to add a frozen ice (either a sorbet or a sherbet). I like how it adds even more fruit flavor, plus it makes the Fruit Smoothie thick and icy cold. Sorbet and Sherbet are both made using fresh fruit (juices/purees), sugar, water and sometimes lemon/lime juice. Sherbets, however, also contain milk and/or cream, and sometimes even eggs.
A good Smoothie uses high quality ingredients, that means fresh fruit at its prime. You can also use unsweetened frozen fruit which has the advantage of chilling your Smoothie so you do not have to add crushed ice, and it gives your Smoothie a thick consistency. Another point on fruit choices. Keep in mind that some fruits, like bananas (I like to use frozen bananas), add both sweetness and flavor to your Smoothie, and they also have the advantage of being a natural thickener. If you are going to add ice, try to use crushed or shaved ice as it easier to blend than ice cubes. If you do not have crushed ice, then place ice cubes in a plastic freezer bag, wrap it in a dish towel, and pound it with a rolling pin or meat mallet until it is crushed.
The great thing about making a Smoothie is that you can use customize it to your own tastes. Both the type and amount of fruit, frozen ices, yogurt, and fruit juice can be adjusted to suit your taste. Although sweetness usually comes from the fruit and yogurt, add a little granulated white sugar, maple syrup, honey, agave, brown rice syrup if you like a sweeter drink.
